“Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than you need.”

                                                                                                             -Kahlil Gibran

People value things differently, and society has established values that influence each of us.  Decisions made are based, in part, on what is valued.  Money, vehicle, house, education, family, peace of mind, independence, health.  All of these carry some level of importance.  Many seem to intertwine or be dependent upon another.  What is of value to you?  How does it impact decision-making?

Often there is confusion between “value” and “obligation”.  The distinction can be seen in what one does when no one is looking, or when no recognition is to be had, or no one to monitor behaviour.  What choice is made then?  Values may change with experiences and the impact of what we learn about ourselves—insight, maturity.  Perhaps circumstances change values or priorities as well.  Clarity of the core values that drive you will help provide direction.

Regardless of what values are held or in what priority order, there are tenets that should be pervasive:  respect, sincerity, simplicity.  Be generous and take pride in whatever you do.
